Yale Supplemental Essay Prompts 2026-27 + How to Answer Them

Every applicant writes one 200-word essay plus three 200-character short takes, then chooses one of three 400-word prompts: about seven pieces total. Every prompt below is quoted from Yale Admissions and verified against it on September 26, 2026.

Application: Common App or Coalition (Yale-specific questions). Requirements can change during the cycle; Yale's application portal is the final word on what to submit.

Tell us about a topic or idea that excites you and is related to one or more academic areas you selected above. Why are you drawn to it?

How to answer

Go deep on one idea connected to the academic interests you picked, and say why it pulls at you. Yale is reading how your mind works, so show a line of thought rather than a topic summary.
